Senegal is a former French colony that gained independence in the early 1960's. Senegal has maintained strong ties to France and it shows in the infrastructure, relative to its French-speaking neighbours. Senegal boasts an incredible coastline with a blend of vibrant music and delicious food. One of Senegal's legacy lies in the ties to the slave trade. Just pick up a copy of Alex Haley's "Roots" for a history lesson on the region, as it takes place in Senegal's neighbour, the Gambia.
The capital Dakar is a fascinating city on the water with one of the best music scenes in West Africa. If you like African music, you need to visit Dakar.
Senegalese food is the best in West Africa. The staple dish is Yassa, rice served with chicken, fish or meat. The Senegalese people will welcome you with warm arms. Senegal is loud, colourful and vibrant.
