Stage 12 continued south towards the tropics and the savannah. Along the way we skirted through Diawling National Park which offered a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of warthogs, monkeys and an abundant variety of birds. The areas riches are once more displayed in the bucolic bivouac at the Zebrabar that abuts Langue de Barbarie National Park home to over 220 species of birds. With just one stage remaining competitors buzz in anticipation of arriving in Dakar.
While the motorbike race leader Antonio Valero enjoys a practically insurmountable 3 hour lead the car race remains up for grabs with Speed Company leading Wings by 34 minutes. The situation is even more knotted up in the UTV class where only 28 minutes separates the two teams from Motorauto Almeria. Stage 13 has plenty of difficult terrain providing the opportunity to make up some time on the competition as we visit the orange dunes of the Lompoul Desert.
