The last stage on the Mauritanian soil provided high intensity drama and changes at the top of the standings. The leading car in the competition, Wings Team Semenov/Režný, ended up on its side and the crew lost precious time with emergency repairs aided by Wings Off-road Marathon veterans Nachtigal/Režná. The lost time prevented both cars from making the time limit required to enter the second timed special resulting in heavy penalization. When the dust settled the Wings team slipped to 8th place overall some 1/2 hour behind the new car race leader Speedcompany piloted by Marik/Kutmon. The stage winning trio is the same as the day before with Campdera in first, Valero 2nd and Anguiano 3rd. Jose Sanchez also did not have a good day and slipped behind teammates Frances/Sanchez. The most heroic effort of the day goes to Jose Duran who spend the previous night alone in the dunes only to find his way out at daybreak just in time to start today's stage. He is still in a respectable 11th place overall.
All participants are enjoying the comforts of tonight's bivouac on the outskirts of Nouakchott. Great seafood, cold beer and running water are much appreciated comforts after the last 4 days in the African wild. Tomorrow we will liaison south to the warm welcome of Senegal.
